Feature: Greg Fox Performing a Live Score to Tauba Auerbach's Pilot Wave Induction III, 2018
Tauba Auerbach’s video Pilot Wave Induction III restages a physics experiment in which a silicone droplet bounces on its own wave in a pool resting in a vibrating speaker. The video’s soundtrack is a polyrhythmic drumming performance by Greg Fox, alternating between fluttering and hypnagogic, recorded specifically for the video. Illustrating a bizarre wave-participle relationship, the sphere’s movement appears manipulated after-the-fact—but is actually undoctored. Lighting, focus and shutter speed are responsible for the various prismatic qualities of the footage, while the pulsing sublimation of Fox’s performance extends its fitful dreamlike quality.
On November 30, 2018, Greg Fox performed a live score to Pilot Wave Induction III at Paula Cooper Gallery, on the occasion of the Tauba Auerbach’s one-person exhibition, A BROKEN STREAM. Read more about the show in the links below.
