The Messiah Oratorio by Georg Friedrich Händel, edited version by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart from Mozart Week 2020

Saturday, April 11: The Messiah

2:15pm ET (8:15 pm CET in Berlin, Germany)

In the words of its composer, Handel’s Messiah aims at “sublimest sentiments.” It dwells on ultimate concerns, but also on humanity’s concrete fears, troubles and hopes. Mozart’s German-language version of Handel’s Messiah is famous, though seldom heard. Written in 1789, at the request of baroque enthusiast Gottfried van Swieten, this profound arrangement of Handel’s best-known oratorio includes copious woodwind parts. Robert Wilson’s highly acclaimed staging of The Messiah in the version of Mozart recently premiered at the Mozartwoche in Salzburg in January 2020. The production will be broadcast exclusively on the German TV channel 3Sat at 2:15 pm ET (8:15 pm CET).

After the run in Linz, the production was transferred to the Opera House in Perm, Russia. In 2017, the work received a "Golden Mask," the most prestigious Russian theater award, in three categories (Teodor Currentzis - Best Conductor; Nadeshda Pavlova - Best Female Singer; Robert Wilson - Best Lighting Design).
