In tribute to Italy during this particularly challenging time for the country, the Estate of Sol LeWitt is pleased to share a collection of Italian postcards the artist sent to his mother.

Life and work in Italy provided Sol LeWitt with respite from the New York art world. The artist travelled the country extensively from his home in the medieval city of Spoleto, taking inspiration from the nation’s art and architecture and forging relationships with Italian artists and galleries. In the 1980s, LeWitt lived in Spoleto full-time with his wife and daughters, and his legacy can be perceived in the many wall drawings that were installed there.

LeWitt sent the first postcard to his mother from Rome on his earliest trip to Europe, in 1950. The rest document his travels around Spoleto and the surrounding region in the 1970s.
